This Whole Place Is Electronically POLLUTED....
...even your computer.
Hey, everyone! Wow, my schedule has been so hectic lately. Hope you guys are doing great, especially with online classes taking up a lot of our time--and brain cells.
At least you are not throwing old computers away.
Do not worry! I will get to the point. Later. I swear!
Anyways, I have like twenty minutes to write this thing, so if I can get this down in five, that will be aaaaall better. Now, why is time so relevant here? It is simple. A couple of decades ago, maybe five, the world was not really into computers much.
Well, do not get me wrong! I am pretty sure scientists and engineers were already fiddling with computers back in the day. In fact, they were SO big, engineers were using up their brain cells trying to figure out how to make computers smaller. Ahhhhh, those were the days. During those days, since not everyone had access to a computer, there were not a lot of broken parts or old computer mumbo jumbo lying around.
Nowadays, though, you will find broken computer parts, or electronic spares scattered in dump sites, or just about anywhere you would throw trash. We call these electronic waste orrrrrr e-waste. You might ask, what is so bad about electronic waste?
Well, it is basically pollution. With tech stuff.
According to CalRecycle, e-waste refers to products nearing the end of their useful life. Because of this, they are no longer of any use to their owners, and hence are just thrown. This is really bad, especially considering certain components of these electronics are hazardous to the environment.
Example being, if you throw your old monitor, its wires and other components can release materials that can be harmful to nature. If we do not mitigate this, especially with the rise of technological advancement in the world, the waste from the past might further harm the environment, which will not be good for us in the long run.
It is good to know, thought, that companies are doing their part to tackle this problem. For example, Hewlett-Packard is promoting conscious and proper mitigation of e-waste through collecting electronic waste, with compensation, from hoarders in order to safely destroy data and electronic devices at the end of useful life. Furthermore, Fairphone has been ethically sourcing materials in order to create a positive impact on the tech industry.
I honestly feel bad, knowing I have also contributed to the waste, as my family had thrown several devices over the last few decades due to these having been well past their useful life. Currently, though, my gadgets are all up to date. With that being said, now that I know ways on how to properly deal with e-waste in a manner that is environmentally-friendly, when my current devices eventually reach the end of their useful life, I will see to it that these proper measures will be observed and done.
I mean, if I can get some extra cash by turning over my electronic waste to a green tech company, then why not, right? Cha-ching!
